A Glorious History
Today’s Uttaranchal which also belongs to mid Himalayan region of Garhwal and Kumaon finds its description in Puran by the name of Kedarkhand and Manaskhand. The land was referred with different name as in Upnishada it was known as Uttrapanchal, Valmaki who wrote Ramayana called it Uttrakaushal and Vedavyas named it as Uttrakuru. This was also land of great Kautilya and Panini with erstwhile name – Uattarapatti. All parts of Uttaranchal are called with different names such as Rudrahimalaya, Kamaugarh, Kamadesh, Kumaon and so on. Garwhal which comprises 52 fortresses stack with the name over past 500 years. Though, only Chamoli and Pithoragarh were accredited as Uttaranchal by the government citing the security reasons but the entire region of the land envelopes 51,125 sq. km of areas consisting over 15000 villages and 89 developmental divisions including some neighbouring plains for the purpose of topographical and cultural unit.

Both climate and geographical conditions determine the lifestyle of Uttaranchal. Though, Uttaranchal has chiefly two district tribes - Garhwali and Kumaoni but you can also see others naming Shauka, Buksha, Jadh, Marcha, Tolcha, Tharu, Jaunsari, Bhotia, Raji and Gujjar. The state is culturally dominant with Hindu population (90% of total). As per the language, you will identify people in speaking their soft-toned dialect which are Garhawlas or Kumaon.
