Nathdwara is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site and rated as one of the most distinguished pilgrimage shrines of India, enshrining Krishna as Govardhana Giridhari. Located 48-km northeast of Udaipur in Rajasthan, it’s on the banks of the Banas River. The place enshrines Shrinathji - an image of Krishna, which was initially preserved at the Vraja Bhoomi at Mount Govardhana near Mathura. The name Nathdwara denoting 'Gate of the Lord', the image had to shift to Mewar to protect it from Aurangazeb, the Mughal monarch. The legends have it that the chariot carrying the image anyhow got fixed here, thus paving the way for a temple to be built. The then Rana of Mewar, at Nathdwara, duly permitted the building of the temple. This is a revered temple and place of pilgrim amongst believers. Devotees come here in great numbers during occasions of "Janamashtmi" the day of Lord's birth and other festivals like Holi.
