MUNNAR


Situated in the undulating mountain ranges of the southern Western Ghats, Munnar is one of the most unparalleled places among the tourists’ attractions of Kerala. The presence of inevitable natural beauty blended with several pristine surroundings has remarkably lured scores of tourists not only from India but also from foreign lands. The place is quite gifted with natural traits and other major highlights of tourist importance such as striking ambiance, lush greenery, tea gardens, large but captivating lakes, thick forests, and cool & healthy climate.

There is confluence of three mountain streams naming Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala at which Munnar is located. Owing to its natural scenic beauty, Munnar was once the summer resort of the British government in south India. The pristine beauty and natural landscape are such a beautiful presentation of the place that it is impossible to describe them in words. A trip to this land takes you to the world of sheer beauty where life seems exotic and mesmerising.

Climate Condition


Though the tourists can visit Munnar all the year around but the favourite time to visit this place is from September to May. There is onset of monsoon from June to September and if you make your tour to this land in winter season, don’t forget to carry heavy woollen clothes or light sweaters with you to keep away from the chill.

Places to visit


The tourists can have panoramic view of lush green surroundings and densely forested hills from Munnar. Walking down in this small town in the morning is such a thrilling experience. A tour to this land will let you see the various tea estates of the place and view the whole process of making tea, right from picking up the tealeaves and sending them to process in Kundale tea plantation. You can also view Anaimudi (2,695 m), the highest peak of southern India.

The Christ Church is other tourist attraction of this place. This stone-constructed church was built by the British in 1910. The church is well-known for its stain glass windows. It has a number of commemorative inscriptions engraved in brass in the memory of the tea planters. The adventure freaks can enjoy paragliding course here conducted by the National Adventure Foundation of Munnar. One who loves boating can use their skills in the lakes in Munnar.

Other Sightseeing Attractions


A tour to Munnar takes you to the Evarikulam National Park at 16 km away from the town Munnar. The park houses wildlife such as elephants, lion-tailed macaque and the Nilgiri tahr which is declared endangered animal. The tourist can also spot Rajamala hills located just in the adjacent of national park.

At the distance of 42 km from Munnar you will see Marayoor located to the eastern side from Evarikulam National Park. The tourist will gain exotic experience of serene ambiance and charm of a sandalwood forest. Moving ahead at almost 10 km from Marayoor you will spot Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, a place housing wildlife such as elephants, leopards and many more. Mudapetty Dam is a famous picnic spot located at the distance of 10 km from Munnar. You can also embark on boating and horse riding here.

How to Reach Munnar


By Air & Rail
There is no airport or railway connectivity to Munnar. However, the tourists can board flight or catch train at Kochi, a 130 km drive from the west of Munnar.

By Road
Munnar is well-connected with roads from most of the towns in Kerala. You can also get here from Madurai (6 hours) and Coimbatore (6 hours); both are in the state of Tamil Nadu.
