MAHARASHTRA


Maharashtra which stands for the name the “Great Nation” is said to have been a derivative form of the word “Rathi” denoting those who built chariots and drove them also known as Maharathi or brave. Located in northern part of Peninsular India, the state is expanded in 308000 square kilometres with the population near about eight crore, the state forms the largest territory in India. Located in the northern part of India, the state is quite blessed with lots of scenic beauty, verdant hills, beautiful coastal plains and tall heightened forts; geographically offering a different shape of the state. This is the very land that gave birth to Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire whose gallantry and courage against fighting Mughal Empire is still remembered with proud.

Mumbai, the financial capital of the state also housing world’s second biggest film industry Hollywood is really a charm of the state. The city of Mumbai is said to never fall asleep as it continuously remains hummed with activities. The contemporary form of Maharashtra is combination of both its own traditional culture and western education; both making the state a cosmopolitan one.

History of the State


As mentioned earlier, the name of the state was taken from the word Rathi meaning chariot driver. The state was also described by Chinese traveller Huan Tsang in his book. In addition, the state also witnessed the gallantry deed of Shiavaji Bhosle who led the foundation of Maratha Empire and fought against the Mughal to his death. Later the power came into the hand of Sambhaji, son of Shivaji but he turned out to be a weak ruler and since then, from 1680 to 1707, Maharashtra experienced weak governance.

Culture


The land of Maharashtra comprises people from different castes and creeds and consequently the state has multi-cultured society where different sorts of dance, music and folk songs are prevailing. In the course of history the people of the state changed their conventional wearing and have adopted the latest fashions. As per cuisine, the mouth watering delight of Konkan and Varadi and Mumbai chaats will quite infuse unforgettable taste. Dances like Povada, Lavani and Koli tuned into rhythematic music will swipe your feet off.

Alibag
Located at Raigad, a district with closeness to Arabian Sea, the site is quite famous for offering utmost relaxation and some attractions like forts, palaces and temples known for their respective historical charms.

Appu Ghar
This famous amusement park for kids is located in Pune city. Offering blends of games, fun and frolics, the place is an ideal one to celebrate holiday with family and kids.

Baneshwar
At the distance of 30 kms away from Pune, the site is quite famous for its beauty and Baneshwar temple. Tourists can enjoy swimming in a tinny stream behind the temple.

Bhushi Dam
The site away at 5 kms from Lonavala is famous for being an ideal spot of picnickers. A waterfall near the dam offers thrilling experience to the tourists.

Brahmagiri
This is the name of a mountain with 550 metres of height located at Nasik town. The sacred river Godavari flows from this mountain and cascades into three directions naming Godavari, Vaitarna and Chakra Tirth. Attractions like Kolambika Devi Temple, Gorakh Gumpha Ganga Sagar and Kolambika Devi Temple delight the tourist a lot.
