DAMAN & DIU


Popular for their beaches and exotic liquors, Daman & Diu are two islands in the western part of India. The both delight tourists for their natural charm and calmness. These twin islands have a rich historic and simply create a paradise for those in search of tranquility. They both have the glittering forts and churches of the past and a tinge of modernity to delight the guests.

History


Both these islands have once been ruled by the Portuguese. The rich architecture suggests that the twin islands have a deep influence of the Portuguese rule. The invaders took control of Daman in 1531 and also tried to control Diu at the same time. The invaders took full advantage of the internal conflict of the then rulers. As after gaining independence from the British rule in 1947, the Indian attempts to take control on both the islands came true by as late as 1961.

Culture


Daman and Diu have the same cultural ethos and values as the state of Gujarat as the people are quite similar to the people of the adjoining Gujarat state. Here, tourists can easily feel the imprint of Gujarati traditions. Hindu population dominates the island and Gujarati is widely spoken language here. Daman is famous for its multi faced cultural heritage. People are here seen more involved in dance and music. All fairs and festivals are enjoyed and people show a great sense of enthusiasm. An amazing fusion of tribal, Indian, European culture could be felt in Daman’s culture. Portuguese dances can be seen there as well by the people.

Tourist Attractions

In Daman, tourists get a chance to visit the Fort of St. Jerome at Nani Daman. At the same site, they will get to see a Jain temple as well. More so, tourists will see the 17th-century-old Se Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady of Rosary in Moti Daman. Besides these, elegant Portuguese carvings would be visible on the walls of these churches. These churches have been built in ancient Gothic style and surely delight all them who go see. Other places to see in Daman are the princely Light House, the amusement park and the Gandhi Park at Daman jetty. There is a wide range of beaches tourists can enjoy with élan. Devka beach easily features among the most famous beaches in Daman. The Jampore beach is also a delight for the swimmers and is located very near the Gujarat border. If you are interested in fountains and promenades, then the lake garden of Satya Nagar Udyan would be another place to visit.

In Diu, the most famous spot would surely be the Zampa Gateway. With elegant carvings of lions, angels and a priest, it will surely delight tourists. More so, the gateway comprises a chapel inside that carries an inscription dating back to 1702. Another popular spot would be the artificial Zampa waterfall. St. Paul's Church would surely delight the guests as it’s the only active church there. Close to it, you can see the old St. Thomas's Church which has now been converted into the Diu Museum. More so, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi now serves as a hospital. You can see the Marwar memorial which reminds the victory over the Portuguese. Jallandhar and Gangeshwar temple are other popular places there. The Nagoa beach, Gomptimata, Chakratirth and the splendid Sunset Point are some other popular beaches in Diu.
